Why Experts Rave About Green Tea Antioxidants

Not just antioxidants. It is green tea antioxidants. A primer to flavonoid, catechin and EGCG.

Have you heard about free radicals?

Free radicals are everywhere - in the air we breathe, food we eat and even in the sunlight. Every moment, the body absorbs oxygen and turns it into energy in a process called oxidation. This process also releases free radicals. Free radicals are generally mopped up by substances called antioxidants before they can hurt us. As we age, however, this process becomes more inefficient. Highly reactive, these harmful molecules travel around our body damaging cells and DNA, causing aging, heart disease, strokes and cancers.Free radicals cause those emerging wrinkles and thinning skin that we see more and more in our mirror daily. Many experts believe antioxidants, by neutralising oxidative damage, could slow down aging.

Green tea antioxidants come from their abundant polyphenols. There are many different tea, but green tea contains the most polyphenols - about 30% to 40%. Black tea contains only 3% to 10% polyphenols. Perhaps this is the reason why green tea is associated with more health benefits compared to black tea.

The most beneficial constituents of polyphenols are the flavonoids. What is so special about flavonoids? Have you heard of catechin and EGCG? They are all related.

Flavonoid

Tea ranks among plants with one of the highest total flavonoid content. Scientists have called flavonoids the "nature's biological response modifiers". They modify our body's reaction to allergens, viruses and carcinogens. They are anti-allergic, anti-inflammatory , anti-microbial and anti-cancer. Most importantly, they are antioxidants. The so-called superfood - berries, broccoli, onions and pomegranates - all contain flavonoids. And so do red wine and dark chocolate. Imagine sipping your cup of tea with your favourite dark chocolate.

Health experts love flavonoids so much that the many beneficial effects of these food have been attributed to them, rather than to other known nutrients.

Catechin and EGCG

Green tea contains a simple form of flavonoid called catechin. The main catechins found in green tea are:

  1. Epicatechin
  2. Epicatechin-3-gallate
  3. Epigallocatechin
  4. Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (also known as EGCG)

EGCG, found in the highest concentration in green tea, is the most active and best researched of all green tea catechins. Green tea antioxidants are more portent than well established antioxidants such as vitamins A, C and E. EGCG has been found to be over 100 times more effective in neutralizing free radicals than vitamin C and 25 times more powerful than vitamin E. It also tops other antioxidants such as butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) and resveratol.

Scientists in HNRCA of Tufts University, United States, found that green tea antioxidants are less easily absorbed into our body than vitamin C. But their abundant quantities more than make up for it. The researchers found that one cup of green tea has about 200 milligrams of catechins, which is the equivalent of eight apples.  A medium to large size apple has only 15 milligrams of catechins and 10 milligrams of vitamin C.

If only grandma knew about this when she asked me to munch those apples. I wouldn't take this literally, as the amount of catechins found in a cup of green tea can be much lower than 200 milligrams. A rich brew of high quality loose leaf will contain much more catechins than a low quality teabag.

Green tea antioxidants are more plentiful than we have imagined, and far more powerful than any scientists have thought. No wonder health experts are excited by this amazing drink.
